So we bought a farm… now what?

We have both always had a passion for animals, so when we met and started building a life together, we quickly started to outgrow my small two bedroom bungalow that sat on less than a quarter acre in town.

We had 4 dogs, 3 cats, chickens in a pen in the backyard, a tank of dart frogs in the master bedroom, a fresh water tank in the living room, saltwater tank in the kitchen, and the spare room, which was also called the animal room, was filled with many many tanks of reptiles and amphibians. We’re animal people. We realized the way that we and the rest of the world reacted in shock to Tiger King was very similar to the way that our friends and family reacted to our hobby. We really had outgrown the bungalow and needed change.

When we first went to look at the farmette, we instantly fell in love with it. We knew it needed some work and was being sold “as is”, but we also saw the potential that it had. Trent’s dream was always revolving around raising and breeding chickens, and we knew the farm property was the perfect opportunity to make that happen. It came with an old barn, a small garage, and a fenced in pasture.

So we’re planning on growing our flock, and we also have some rabbits we intend on breeding, but what else can we do with 2.94 acres? We’ve talked about goats, sheep, donkeys, ponies, llamas, alpacas, bees, horses, cows, but haven’t settled on anything yet. What are your recommendations for growing out homestead?
